This gritty crime drama, set in drug-ravaged Harlem during the early ’60s, is based on real events during a time when the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement collided after locally respected crime boss Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson, fresh out of prison, teams up with activist Malcolm X to take back Harlem from the Italian mobsters of the Genovese family. It’s a TV prequel to the 2007 film American Gangster, which centred on the criminal enterprise of Frank Lucas. Starring Lucy Fry, Forest Whitaker and Demi Singleton, the show is fresh from the US.
