Wait for the weekend Smiley Happy  What's sad is that there has been no interaction from any of the MC staff this week in any of the CU problem threads Smiley Sad

Re: CU+ http 504 error

Those numbers should be okay for downloads (which is usually the way I consume CU+ items).

Re: CU+ http 504 error

Have run numerous traces via Vodacom using my tablet today.

Performance varies quite a bit w.r.t time of day, and will pick up various edge devices in JNB. Also will overflow to CPT on occassion.

Latency is about 100 -  200 ms

VC 3G connection - tablet can't handle more than 3G - only device with enough memeory available to run any of the MC apps.

It is not the actual latency figure that bothers me too much, it is the variability. A satble delayed line is pretty much okay.

If it's similar to the CU+ poor service on MC's online download service, maybe you can use a friend/relative's account on your devices.

Re: CU+ http 504 error

My downlaods today seem to be going rather well. Not only have I not had any errors thus far, but they actually seem faster than usual.

That 165 IP address. I did hit that once myself over the last few days of checking things. I have done the tracert and ping on the actual domain name, and not any IP. Today's tests have resolved to the CPT addresses, where I am (as it should be).

Re: CU+ http 504 error

I have been running trace routes all day on the CF IP addresses identified in CT and JNB all day to try and pick up any time of day issues.  Today, things have worked rather well all round with on average, only an additional 17ms to reach CT devices.

BUT there was one trace that again picked up that .165 address and pushed off to the US of A!

The toggling between the devices is what one would expect. It should not be that you always pick up the same device if dynamic load balancing is happening.

Now IF ONLY, I could actually try a genuine movie download .......

Re: CU+ http 504 error

Interesting point!

Best, one would assume, would be to let CF handle things. They know their hardware and software. Better to have them create the best solution for content, rather than MC.

Re: CU+ http 504 error

This raises another interesting question.

At what point does CF do load balancing? At the session level? Or in English for us normal people, Per connection setup for a particular movie?

The above assumes of course that CF does the load balancing on behalf of MC.  If not well then long exposure to MC shenanigans and their security paranoia suggests that MC have screwed up the load balancing configurations.

Re: CU+ http 504 error

I agree with @arf9999 to the point of you "shouldn't" have to do that. But, as I think we've seen, what is meant to happen, and what does happen, are two different things it seems.

So, as @GeoffD has said there is no guarentee. Another reason why I have tried different DNS configurations on my network too. I've seen issues at times due to international connectivity issues, and what seems to be poor configuration on the side of the DStv CDN.

For what it's worth, I just tried a tracert on: explora.dstvcdn.com again, and got 143.204.65.24.

If I flush my PC DNS, I then get 143.204.65.110, repeating, then hops between the two above.

You don't need to flush your DNS, Cloudfront will update DNS records dynamically in order to loadbalance their servers. If you just do multiple traceroutes, you'll find that some resolve to different IPs.

Sure, I would hope so. BUT there is no guarantee that the DNS records update suffciently quick enough for all all users under high traffic conditions. Especially those that don not have the best of connectivity.
