MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

MC's lack of interest on this forum is now clear - for the last week, despite all our efforts, there were no visible Mods of note!! They are back today, at least a couple of them, but I now consider this forum a waste of time in large respect. Moderation efforts are the weakest they've been (moving threads, dealing with spammers), responses take far too long on average, answers are weak and too often without knowledge.

Forum software remains a joke.

Many of MC's service "efforts" have now become 3rd world level.

Can't be bothered further.

(But thanks to those who make some effort anyway.)

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

There's been a bit of an improvement re MC helping here, many more threads getting answered, and fairly regularly with real answers, not just sending them elsewhere. Still often taking far too long though.

The problem is it's largely unofficial, just Mods being fair and considerate. So what to now do when other Mods don't?... a careful balance will be needed between criticism and leaving well alone it seems, but in the end I fear it will likely all fall down anyway as the Mods will only take so much from hotheads who will always do their thing. And I guess we're all hotheads at times...

Getting MC to change their mind? Good luck - in my case I couldn't be bothered explaining it to them further, so they must suffer results from their huge lack of quality help anywhere (except the very busy few specialists elsewhere). Unfortunately that will also affect OUR service further in the end.

BTW, don't you miss getting far more fault reports MC?? Don't you want to find and correct what's eating at your profits??

One last thing - this weekend, after a hint, for the first time that I've seen a Mod moved a thread to its correct section!

So no more excuses Mods, we now know you can do it. A tidy forum is a far more functional forum. Please.

I'll be standing back again now.

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

Again it wouldn't have taken anyone doing some sort of quality control to watch a couple of minutes of the picture and they'd have seen the problem. Or asked the supplier if the film needed to have subtitles and if so were they included. This, I think, should be standard practice when obtaining ANY film. Our decoders these days have the subtitle option and lots of people with hearing problems perhaps rely on a film having subtitles. I just wonder how many films have been bought which contain subtitles, even though they may be in English, but where the subtitle option has been omitted similar to this Longest Day omission? Hard of hearing people may need these subtitles on all movies but are perhaps being denied them due to some bad quality control from Multichoice.

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

I just find it a bit sad that they make the effort to arrange pop-up channels like 'Epic Battles', get content that we don't often see like 'The Longest Day', I record it and look forward to watching it... then when I settle down to watch it I have to stop after 5 mins due to a small but important issue like missing subs. Is there a point to showing things when they are ruined in this way? If I have a DVD missing crucial subs I could at least go to one of the free subtitle sites and get them but with DSTV it's take it or leave it so it really needs to be right. Hope someone at least gives this issue some thought.

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

It's clear that both MC and the supplier have over-automated their preparation and supply procedures here.

Not really anyone's fault I would think, this is the atypical automation thinking of the business world these days, which doesn't really work properly (the suddenly "wonderful AI" concepts) and is hard to go against given the complexity and cost of the vast sourcing efforts involved.

Good luck getting answers, insist on management being approached if you want any chance.

As for the sudden re-emergence of the anti-spam moderator's mistakes - I may have been the trigger, and the problem manually created to try put a spanner in my works at the time. Has happened before on this forum, a number of times to a few of us.

Conspiracy theory? No, there's no reason for what has been fixed (little has though) to then break again, unless fiddled with...

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

"Hi @Beetle In the very beginning of the movie, first 5 minutes if I recall correctly as I stopped watching after that, there are French and German parts which are supposed to have English subs, going all the way back to the original film release in theatres. In the VHS days they were burned in the picture, with bu-rays one can select "forced English" subs for these parts - not sure about the DVD but I would guess it is the same. On DSTV there are no subs for these scenes, if you turn on the "English" subs which are available it says something like (Talking French) in these parts which is rather useless and frustrating!"

I have just taken a quick look at my dvd version of this movie and am shocked that DSTV didn't have the subtitles when the showed this movie. The dvd had the English subtitles displayed for both the German and French languages. Considering that there was no english dialogue for this early part of the film, about the five or so minutes you speak of, it must have been pretty frustrating watching the movie. Did DSTV at least have the captions showing who the different characters were? So and so being a Resistance Fighter, or a German Field Marshall etc etc? If not this either then something is seriously wrong with their quality control. Something we've mentioned before. Perhaps Multichoice, or as I've been referring to them as DSTV, should consider hiring someone who is perhaps a bit more film concious to oversee these things? I can only imagine that if there wasn't any subtitles during the early part of the film that there wouldn't have been for the rest of the film either? Which would possibly have made a lot of the scenes ridiculous.

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

Hi @Grace_DStv1

Thanks for the response and for looking into this. Must say I'm a bit disappointed with their "the asset doesn't contain subtitles" response, as this was the same as I got when I contacted the Customer Care Team on Twitter about the missing subs for non-English parts of Stargate. If the asset isn't coming with the correct subs then shouldn't they get in touch with the distributor to find out why and to sort it out? We're missing parts of the plot and it makes some movies not worth watching imo. The Longest Day was famous for showing D-Day from both sides and filming parts in foreign language with subs. Don't want another post to disappear so I won't link it, but there is an excellent write-up on the movie on the filmbobbery site which talks about how it was released: "Note the way the letterboxing is raised so that subtitles can be placed in the larger black area at the bottom of the screen; it is an ingenious way to present translated dialogue without sacrificing any of the visual composition". Back in the days of VHS and earlier tv broadcasts these subs were 'burned in' to the picture. Now if one buys a blu-ray the 'forced English' subs for these parts are a selectable option. Why aren't we getting them on DSTV and having to miss out on parts of the plot? Isn't this a serious problem which needs looking into, not "they didn't come like that" answers? Would really appreciate if you could pass on my comments.

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

Ryan David - I see that a message has been posted saying, if I understood the message correctly, that there were no subtitles available for when a foreign language was being spoken in the movie The Longest Day. Can you tell me where in the movie you experienced this lack of subtitles? Beginning, middle, end????? Give me some idea please as I have the dvd and would like to check up on this without having to watch the whole movie again.

@RyanDavid, not a chance, we love hearing from you as well Smiley Happy. Not sure how your posts disappeared, do let us know when it happens again so we can have this looked into.

In regards to the movie in question, we received this feedback below;-

“Please note that the asset has "Closed caption" and not interpretation of the language other than English.”

Re: MC's lack of real involvement on THEIR forum

Hi @Grace_DStv1

Thanks for the response. The posts were made right before I posted in this thread, tried twice but both times they disappeared within seconds, and it still seems the most recent post in 'Movies', where I tried to post, was a month ago. My post was a bit grumpy as I was annoyed that I have to delete a movie I was looking forward to (The Longest Day, which I recorded on the Epic Battles pop-up), because once again subtitles for non-English parts are missing from a movie, in this case for the French and German parts which are a key part of the film's intention to show D-Day from all sides. But if I crossed a line in my comments it would be helpful to know so I can avoid it in future rather than posts just disappearing, which just discourages one from posting here.

Anyway, I guess I'll try to raise the subs issue on Twitter or somewhere else, it really does need to be addressed going forward.
