Re: MUD Installations: New DStv Requirements

Geoff wrote The older decoders had less capability. It would be interesting if those with older decoders (11xx, series and the 2 tuner PVRs and a working SD PVR) can let us know how many networks those decoders could cater for. The Pace HD 2P cater for the Home network plus 18 additional networks

Also 18 Networks (Home Network plus 17 more).

On the Explora 1 it's only 6 (Home Network plus 5 more). But I've no knowledge yet re how SMATV works with a primarily Unicable environment, so don't know details and therefore limitations re how it achieves the obviously far more than just 5 transposings currently being used (and now apparently just past its limit).

This thread  has raised a very interesting topic about how MUD installations need to be upgraded to be able to cater for future DStv requirements.

It would be really useful if MC could provide their customers of the correct contact details inside Multichoice so that the information can be made available to Body Corporates or owners/tenant committees about who they should conact when seeking information on what the new MUD installation requirements are.

Suffice to say that the older techniques used (SMATV systems) have generally reached the limit, and are now increasingly obsolete.

I have done quite a bit of research into this whole matter in the meantime and here are a few things I did not know until now.

(1) Apprently MC did write to all BCs and community bodies that were on their books as of 2012, to warn them that existing SMATV single cable systems would be compromised and that these should be converted to 5-cable systems with cascaded multiswitches. 4 cables for the satellite and one for terrestrial. Note this was then and now still not a cheap solution.

(2) This was before optic fibre based systems were proven and available.  Note this is also not a cheap solution either.

(3) The older single cable SMATV technologies are still available.  There is really no technical limit to the number of channels that can be converted/transposed to single polarity setups (vertical). The real limiting factor is the STB design! Mainly, the number of networks that can be setup on the decoders, and the software implications.  Now below are the number of networks that are available for the 4 tuner decoders (PACE, and UEC). Both are capable of 18 networks in addition to the home network.  The older decoders had less capability. It would be interesting if those with older decoders (11xx, series and the 2 tuner PVRs and a working SD PVR) can let us know how many networks those decoders could cater for.

It would be interesting to find out how many networks are available on the Exploras and the HD decoders, series 4 and 5.

(real pity Keith is not around to see what he knows about the subject).

(4) The development of SATCR / Unicable systems was driven by this increasing problem, which is much worse in many parts of the World, weher not only are ther many more channels availble, but alos because there are many more satellites carrying TV available. There this issue is not just combining many transponders on to one feed BUT alos to combine the signals from more then one satellite on to one common feed, feeding MUDs.  So out problem in SA is really quite a small one, as we are mainly dealing with transponders available from one orbital position.

Re: MUD Installations: New DStv Requirements

MC, please do respond to this thread next week. Perhaps consult with David in your Field Services division, he used to help on the old Forum.

TIA
