The Lounge

Re: The Lounge

Krugie, last question if you don't mind.
Are you saying that there's still around 5 gig of storage available for your own personal use after the box has come with it's pre-installed apps? Apps like Netflix, Showmax, You Tube, DStv Now and perhaps a few others? Or aren't those apps installed on your box?
Once again thanks for the info. and taking the time and effort to assist

Re: The Lounge

The Mi Box S is the newer model, replacing the Mi Box. It runs on Android 8.2 compared to Android 6 (or 7?) on the previous model and, as far as I am aware, is only available with 2 gig memory/8 gig storage. Nowhere on the packaging does it actually state storage but under settings mine shows 5.2 gig storage (the rest being taken up by Android).

As I mentioned, I have hardly used it to date but the little bit that I played around never had any buffering issues.

Re: The Lounge

Thanks Krugie and GeoffD.
Krugie the Mi Box S is, I think, the one that I'm currently thinking of. Is yours the one with 2 gig of Ram and 8 gig of storage? Concern is the lack of storage for any additional apps I may wish to add to the box and also not sure if 2 gig of Ram is enough to stream movies etc without buffering. I have a stupid Huawei Tablet which only has 1 gig of Ram and it's painful to use. Takes it's time changing from one app to another. Also don't try to keep more than two apps open at the same time. Even two is a problem.

When I stream to my Explora in the lounge there's no problem. Whether it be Showmax, Netflix or You Tube. Connected via wi-fi. Again it's the concern regarding the Ram of the media box which I'm not sure will be enough to prevent buffering.

Re: The Lounge

I actually bought a Mi Box S recently but, to be honest - I have barely touched it to date so I'm not able to offer much advice other than saying DSTV Now does work on it effortlessly and so does Netflix. I have a 100Mbps fibre line though so can'tcomment on a 10Mbps line. The Mi Box S doesn't have an Ethernet port to connect to your router though - it only connects via WiFi and supports up to 4K.

Also, make sure the box you get (if any) is Google Certified in order for DSTV Now to work.

Re: The Lounge

New topic and one I think I may have asked about before but looking back I don't see anything regarding this being posted before. Not sure if it's even appropriate or allowed but I'll ask anyway and the moderators, or whoever, can delete this should they deem it necessary.

Android Media Boxes
Anyone have any knowledge of these things? My bedroom tv doesn't allow me to access Showmax and other streaming sites. You Tube. As I spend a lot of time in the bedroom, wife has control of the lounge tv and the Explora while she watches her afternoon shows that I'm not interested in, I am thinking of obtaining one of these boxes for the bedroom. My internet connection runs at 10 Mbps on a Vumatel fibre line. Ideally I'd be wanting something with a fair bit of Ram and at least 16 gig of Storage space. Also needs to be able to be linked to the internet for downloading of an app or two.

Anyone have any knowledge of these things and what would meet my needs? Thanks.

Re: The Lounge

Wonder if it's possible to put something like that on top of our trains? You seen how some people have to sit on top of the coaches?

Re: The Lounge

However, could be considered a very effective population control solution.
